Jeremy Howick

Community Support Worker

Jeremy was born and raised in Victoria, where he has lived since he was a young child. He comes from a Welsh and Indigenous background, with his father being from the Mohawk Nation. Growing up, Jeremy spent much of his childhood playing hockey before eventually discovering a passion for cooking. He later joined the Canadian Navy as a Naval Communicator, beginning a career that would take him around the world, including deployments to South America, the South China Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the coast of Somalia.

Jeremy's time in the Navy was also marked by a long and challenging journey with addiction. After several attempts at treatment and periods of sobriety, he eventually reached a turning point following a devastating relapse. In 2023, Jeremy came to Cedars for treatment, initially for 10 days, but ultimately stayed for 54 days. He describes his time at Cedars as pivotal in his life and an important part of changing his outlook and building a foundation for lasting recovery.

Today, Jeremy has more than two and a half years of sobriety and is deeply involved in the recovery community. He has worked a strong 12-step program, sponsors others, and has taken on a variety of service roles. He also completed the Addictions and Community Health Professional program at Sundance College and completed his practicum with Our Place Society.

After everything that brought him to this point, Jeremy is grateful to now be part of the Cedars team. He sees this as the beginning of an exciting new chapter and is thankful for the opportunity to give back to the place that played such an important role in his own recovery.
