Nathan Slawinski
Community Support Worker
Nathan grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with his early years shaping his resilience and independence, while also laying the groundwork for a deeper journey of growth later in life.
Nathan’s recovery journey began at age 26, after 11 years of living in addiction. For much of that time, he coped through isolation, relying heavily on the gym and video games to manage dissociation and his reactions to life. Letting go of control proved to be one of the most challenging and transformative aspects of his recovery.
Through therapy, counseling, fellowship, and learning to rely on a Higher Power, he shares the discovery that connection is the opposite of isolation. In community, Nathan has found a depth of fullness and happiness he had never experienced while trying to navigate life alone. This transformation fuels his passion for recovery work. He understands both the pain of disconnection and the profound renewal that comes from belonging and shared healing.
Nathan completed an Addictions Worker Certificate and often shares that he also earned a “school of life” education through his lived experience. Both formal education and personal recovery shape the grounded, empathetic presence he brings to his work.
He was drawn to working at Cedars after experiencing firsthand, the impact of structured recovery and healthy living in action. Observing staff consistently practice what they teach - and witnessing the profound effect this had on others - left a lasting impression. Recovery work is the first path he has encountered that feels meaningful enough to commit to wholeheartedly, without resentment or complaint. Nathan knew he wanted to be part of the Cedars mission.
In his spare time, Nathan enjoys going to the gym, watching television series, attending counseling, playing video games, writing poetry and spoken word, singing, dancing occasionally, and going for drives. He values both personal growth and creative expression in his life.
